About Madurai Symposium

The Madurai Symposium is a development platform where development stakeholders—community institutions, civil societies, the Government, non-government organisations (NGOs), financial institutions and academia—converge at Madurai for conventions, conferences and a development carnival. Three biennial symposiums were organized in Madurai in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Each Symposium was attended by over 15,000 participants. The 2009 Madurai Symposium will be held in September 2009 and will bring development stakeholders together to share and learn from each others’ experiences and practices.

This Year Focus: MDGs

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have emerged as a thrust area among development stakeholders. To develop solutions to meet these goals, it is important to explore joint ventures involving all actors—including governments, donors, NGOs, civil societies and corporations—and to develop systems to facilitate sharing knowledge, resources and expertise among all stakeholders. Poor countries have pledged to govern better, and invest in their people through health care and education. Rich countries have pledged to support them through aid, debt relief, and fairer trade. The challenge is contextualizing these MDGs and mobilizing collective commitment by all stakeholders. The Indian Government and non-government organisations are taking efforts to achieve these goals through development programmes such as microfinance, water, health and educational programmes.
